Cancer: The Spreading

Last week they discovered that my mother’s lung cancer had spread to her liver, even though the cancer in her lung had become smaller during the chemo-therapy, which is indicative of how vicious it is. They gave us an early indication of how long she has to live, based on others in similar situations; one year. Considering how they thought my father had another six months to live, which turned out to only be twenty-five days, I’m preparing for the worst.

  1. Another thing to consider; apparently, they don’t usually consider operating on lung-cancer, preferring to let chemo- and radio-therapy. Even though they have this policy, and the cancer had spread to my mother’s brain, they did want to operate, since the operation to remove the brain-tumor went well. Now they once again refuse because it’s spread to her liver. They say it’s not going to matter, because the cancer is migrating, so it’ll continue to show up throughout her body, even if they do remove the one in her lung.

Have you had it consulted with another doctor? Maybe the cancer will keep on spreading but slower if they decide to operate. In such cases it’s usually worth it to go to more than one specialist because some doctors are more pro chemo and some more pro surgery.

  3. Oh, goodness. Good luck, Dayve. My thoughts are with your family. You know, though, it can go both ways. My uncle was told one year and lived a full seven. Either way, I hope her days are filled with lots of love and laughter. Big hugs.
