Photography

Some time ago, I came across a modified version of the following photo on Shadowness.com:

I couldn’t quite make out which city it was, but did get several questions about that from friends. One “friend” even went so far as telling me I sucked for not knowing and still putting up the image on my desktop. I really dig the image, and I also was quite curious about it, so I traced the image to the author; Daniel Verson of Verson Photography. I wrote him and told him how much I liked the photo, how I came about it, and asked him where it was taken. He responded. The mail-conversation is below:

Hello Dan,

I hope I’m not intruding, but I had a small question about one of your panoramic photos. It’s the fifth photo in the panoramic gallery on your website that I was interested in. I came across it here where it had been manipulated (not sure if that was with your consent or not): http://www.shadowness.com/art/13634 And in one of the comments there was a link to the original photo. I was amazed by it, and have put it up as my desktop wallpaper for a while now. The one thing I’d like to know is where this photo was taken.

I admire your talent and will check back to your website occasionally to see if you’ve added new work.

Regards,

Dennis

Hello Dennis,

Thank you very much for your compliments. I’m glad you were able to find my work in a roundabout sort of way. I wish I had more control over the manipulated versions of my photos circulating the web, but if it brings in fans, I suppose it’s not too much of a bad thing. As the photo you’re referring to, I took that in my hometown of Chicago, IL. I was in the Sears Tower on the observation deck, 110 stories up and facing West. It’s a multi-image panoramic comprised of roughly 10 photos I took from left to right that I edited together into one. Basically anything on my site with this warped look was done with the same technique. If there’s anything else you’d like to know, feel free to ask. Thanks again for visiting the site!

    That’s pretty cool! :)

Well, now we know. While Chicago is nice-looking, I think it’s exceptionally nice-looking here.

I have to admit, I kind of liked not knowing too, lent it a bit of mystery and fantasy. :)

Heh… the loops and ramps of 4 expressways coming together… the Chicago trademark. It’s a great shot and really shows just how spralling the city is away from Downtown.

Well that’s probably because when most people go up they seem much more interested in the high rise downtown section on the other east/north-east side. More dramatic I suppose, last time I was up there I remember nearly everyone gravitated to that side. I think I actually took a couple of photographs of this view but of course they were never anywhere close to this good.

It’s definitely a stunning piece of work. Oh and on the Bug City thing you are such a nerd. Although the classical definition of that probably applies to most people here. :)
