A Change…

I’m getting less and less motivated to go to Kung Fu lately. Due to some managerial problems the classes are a bit lack-luster, and due to the immense influx of new people it becomes hard to progress as a veteran. You keep having to start over and over because of the new blood, and you get tasked more with helping out and you get less time to train. Also, I’ve noticed that my interest has shifted over the last two years; I’m looking for something a bit less refined, more raw and physical. Though, on the other hand, I can’t see myself not practicing Kung Fu, but that might be because I’ve been doing it for over a decade-and-a-half now.

The closest BJJ school is in Rotterdam or Leiden, which is too much of a hassle for me, and I can’t find any Greco-Roman or Sambo schools. I did find a Krav Maga school here in Amsterdam, perhaps that should be my next stop.

  1. It’s obvious that you’re very bored at home.

I did find the UvA courses, but dismissed them almost immediately when I saw the prices I’d have to pay not being affiliated with the UvA. I like your second link, though the school is in north somewhere. And your third link is for a Judo school affiliated with Pancrase school Chakuriki.

  2. Yup. Though discovered that new seasons have started which cheered me up. And after a nap I’m all ready to have some fun watching Heroes. :)

UvA – it’s the prize for the whole course though, right? That’s not expensive at all, since it would be like 6 euro per lesson. I pay 10 euro for capoeira for each lesson. Your kung fu is cheaper?

Noord – yeah. :) You’d need to sacrifice yourself to go there, I know. Might be worth a try.

The third link – they seem to have one lesson judo/sambo and are listed as a contact in Noord-Holland for learning sambo.

  3. You’re welcome to join one of my classes anytime ;)

But seriously, there should be enough things to choose from in Amsterdam. What are you looking for Krav Maga, Kickboxing, Karate, BJJ? Maybe a mix of the aforementioned?

Dude, more physical, not less. :)

BJJ seems cool, kickboxing and Karate a bit one-sided. I think I might check Krav out. Jim’s going to like it if I do that, I think. And as everyone knows, I do everything to impress him.

  5. Woo! I cannot recommend Krav enough, if you’re looking for something more raw and physical. It likely isn’t going to be technically challenging for you, though a lot of fun. On the plus side, depending on the school you’ll also get a good BJJ background as well, although more street-oriented than sport-oriented.
