Abandonment

My fear of abandonment has reach new and as of yet unknown heights. I just woke up from a dream in which I met a person again after not having seen him in twenty years. He made a big impression on me while growing up and when I asked him if we could stay in touch, confronted me with the cold reality that we probably wouldn’t. Now that I’m awake and analysing my dream, it makes perfect sense that we wouldn’t and I’m actually quite fine with that, but in the dream I was more than a little devastated.

I think my devastation in the dream might be the unvarnished, naked truth of how I really feel while my healthier, emotionally distant opinion now that I’m awake, might just be all my learned responses kicking in to help me deal.

RED 2

So, RED 2 was kind of funny, but there were two things that stood out; , an actor I don’t think I’ve seen before, who really has the best goddamn hair in action films, and then there was this conversation, which made me laugh. A lot.

Marvin: If there’s one thing I love, it’s women and covert ops.
Frank: That’s two things.
Han: No, grasshopper. It is not.

Sad and Funny

Sometimes, when I’m alone, I curl up in a ball and lay there very, very quietly, hoping that everyone forgets me. Then, when I get bored, I pick up my phone and read some mindless stuff and it instantly cheers me up. This cheered me up:

Priorities

My Brother

For the first few years after my brother was born, he had difficulty sleeping. He would cry a lot during the night and generally needed quite a bit of attention. It took a while before we came to realise that this was due to some early onset asthma, after which we rearranged the entire house, got rid of carpets and things became much better.

In that time, to save my mother’s sanity, my sister and I were required to look after our kid brother in the morning, when he was up bright and early, despite keeping my mother up all night, while my mother got some much needed sleep. We’d watch him, feed him, change his diapers and played with him.

When he turned about five or six, I hit a time in my life that I was busy doing other things. Girlfriends, college, going out, etc. I had less to do with my family during that time and I didn’t concern myself with my brother too much. That last until he turned about thirteen. I was twenty-five at the time, was living on my own and was starting my career. It was right after the air force that I started to pay attention to him again. It was partly due to my step-father telling me to take an interest because my brother apparently looked up to me.

Slowly but surely I started to pay more attention. He came and slept over, we watched films and played computer games. (I started to indoctrinate him with the things I thought were important in life.) When he was about sixteen or seventeen that culminated into an actual friendship rather than a younger/older brother relationship. A friendship that’s pretty fucking solid and enviable, if I do say so myself and one I’m very happy with.

Looking back, I should have been there for him more. I should have been more of a big brother to him while he was growing up. I really regret it, but I was too self-involved for a long time. That was a period in which I completely lived and moved with my own personal gratification in mind. I had a lot of fun, but I think I could have done much, if not all of the things I did then, and still have stayed involved.

Anyway, I’m glad it all worked out. I have some examples of people who simply have no relationship with their siblings. Sure, not everyone is going to have the Sam and Dean Winchester relationship that I’m bordering on with my brother, but it’s still miles better than the complete non-relationships some people seem to maintain with their sibs.

Warm

Today was quite warm and humid here in Amsterdam. It’s interesting to see how certain people thrive on the warmth and certain people whither. I’d like to think I’m pretty weather-independent, but I do notice that my energy levels are lower the warmer it gets, and I definitely like cold weather more than I like warm weather, but I’m not a complainer. Some people will complain no matter what weather, it seems. Three weeks ago, these people were complaining that we wouldn’t see a summer this year and now they’re complaining that this is too much.

Work came a little less easy today. While our building is old and heavy and the temperature stays relatively cool despite it being warm outside, we a threshold somehow and even our office was quite warm. Unfortunately, there was also not a gust of wind, which means we couldn’t open up two windows and count on a draft to pulls us through. So today, while my priority list was overflowing, I decided it would be a day to do something fun instead of important.

I wish I could approach all things with that type of flexibility. Weather too hot to concentrate on important things properly? Sure, we’ll just do something fun that needed doing instead.
